How far off our first choice starting line up is this? Pretty close I would think? Looks like i'm going to be back for a game, either the home opener or Dorchester away - my first Spitfire game in 5 years - Can't wait!!!!

I think Rivs & Pete would probably be Bairdys first choice pairing in the centre of midfield and assume that Matthews would start in goal & Browner would be pushing to get into the 11. But this looked a pretty solid 11 to me and they were quite industrious, aswell as being capable of playing some neat football in patches. I take Enzee's point about Goodhind doing all the talking (as he always does), so Tom seems to be the captain in name only and leaves all the organising to Warren. I think Gareth Barfoot will push Jason hard for the no.1 keeper spot. Having seen him play against us with Totton and for us tonight, he looks a very confident keeper and is also a very competant kicker of the ball. So on the face of it, we now seem to have quite a well balanced squad that are going to be challenging each other for places, rather than knowing their place is safe. We then have the youthful exuberance in the young lads who have come up from the reserves or come back from loans spells. None of these lads will let anyone down when they get their chance, and they will get chances because injuries will certainly play a part in the coming season. Have to say Slabber impressed me, i think he's probbaly one of those that you have to keep ordering around on the pitch to ensure he stays switched on, but he won at least 50% of his headers & looked neat and tidy with his hold up play and cushioned the ball well when laying it off to others. I actually thought it was a very good game for a friendly and there were some meaty challenges being put in by both teams. Didn't agree that Bashley were a long ball team, i thought they tried to play some nice football and played through their midfield alot, but they never looked like scoring, which i would rather put down to our defensive display, rather than any lack of effort or inventiveness on their part. I'm sure they will do well in their league again this season.
I dont want to get too carried away, as its still just a friendly against lower league opposition, but things do seem to be coming along nicely and we now have some great attacking options.
