Ian Oliver Played For Bashley Tonight
I Thought Richard Graham Played Well
And We Could Of Had Alot More In The First Half
But The Second Half I Thought Was Quite Even

We are going up!!

Thought Slabber, Palmer and Graham all had good games. Slabber was good in the air and finished cooly, Palmer had a great touch and played some decent balls and Graham looked tricky on the wing.  Looking forward to seeing them in action at the start of the season. Think Goodhind had an excellent game, marshalled the players a round him well and got forward into some threatening positions. About 20 minutes into the 1st half I was wondering why he isn't wearing the captains armband. Tom seemed a bit quiet and subdued in comparison.

Didn't seem like Bashley had much to offer in the game. Their gameplan seemed to consist of a lot of long balls over the top and trying to get behind the centre backs. Two errors for the goals as well. The Bashley keeper looked a bit out of sorts. I don't think the free kick would have got past a BSS keeper as easily.

Neither keeper was really tested by a decent attempt apart from the two goals in the 1st half and have to say the 2nd half was a deadly dull affair. Can understand us taking our foot off the gas as its a friendly, but should have created a few more chances against a pretty woeful opposition and been a bit more clinical with the few chances we had.

How far off our first choice  starting line up is this? Pretty close I would think?

Looks like i'm going to be back for a game, either the home opener or Dorchester away - my first Spitfire game in 5 years - Can't wait!!!!

I think Rivs & Pete would probably be Bairdys first choice pairing in the centre of midfield and assume that Matthews would start in goal & Browner would be pushing to get into the 11. But this looked a pretty solid 11 to me and they were quite industrious, aswell as being capable of playing some neat football in patches. I take Enzee's point about Goodhind doing all the talking (as he always does), so Tom seems to be the captain in name only and leaves all the organising to Warren. I think Gareth Barfoot will push Jason hard for the no.1 keeper spot. Having seen him play against us with Totton and for us tonight, he looks a very confident keeper and is also a very competant kicker of the ball. So on the face of it, we now seem to have quite a well balanced squad that are going to be challenging each other for places, rather than knowing their place is safe. We then have the youthful exuberance in the young lads who have come up from the reserves or come back from loans spells. None of these lads will let anyone down when they get their chance, and they will get chances because injuries will certainly play a part in the coming season.
Have to say Slabber impressed me, i think he's probbaly one of those that you have to keep ordering around on the pitch to ensure he stays switched on, but he won at least 50% of his headers & looked neat and tidy with his hold up play and cushioned the ball well when laying it off to others.
I actually thought it was a very good game for a friendly and there were some meaty challenges being put in by both teams. Didn't agree that Bashley were a long ball team, i thought they tried to play some nice football and played through their midfield alot, but they never looked like scoring, which i would rather put down to our defensive display, rather than any lack of effort or inventiveness on their part. I'm sure they will do well in their league again this season.

I dont want to get too carried away, as its still just a friendly against lower league opposition, but things do seem to be coming along nicely and we now have some great attacking options.

Hopefully it was just a precaution, no point risking making something worse in a friendly especially when the game had already been sewn up by half-time.

On the Bashley front I saw them at the end of last season and they looked a lot better. If I was a Bashley fan not much to see to make me happy. They can take heart from their number 7 who looked quite industrious, but they had an inability to keep hold of the ball. Ian Oliver did an ok job for them but looked a bit marooned out on the wing as the ball was hardly ever played out there. They did contain us second half but I think that was more down to the pace of the game dropping.
